The Best of 5/6S!

Our assembly is Friday at 11:30 (we would love to see some parents attending). Students should all be practicing the "Choose Kind" song. If students have a part to read in the assembly, they should be rehearsing their parts so that they will not be stumbling over words. They do not have to memorize their parts, but should be able to read it easily. It is sweater day on Friday, so it would be nice if we were all wearing our sweaters to support this day.

As an introduction to our fractions unit, students were given 5 minutes to represent two fifths in as many ways possible. Check out some of the creative ways they came up with:

The students have been discussing how to address social issues in Canada and globally. This weekend I would like them to spend some time looking up issues and choose one to research. They do not need to write a report on the issue they choose, but should gather some information on what the issue is, what is causing the issue, what is in place to already help this issue, and any ideas of how we could help (bringing attention to the problem, raising money). They should feel comfortable talking about the facts of their issue. Grade 5 students should be looking at issues within Canada (Ontario or LaSalle) Grade 6 students should be looking at global issues

This is a reminder that the end of unit quiz for measurement is tomorrow. (See previous post for details)

Students are working on using formulas for area and are practicing in the math text books. Grade 5 students should complete #1, 5, 6, and 9 on p.333. Grade 6 students should complete #3, 4, and 5 on p.354 and then #2 and 3 on p. 357.

On Thursday, students will have their unit quiz on Measurement. This will mostly include perimeter and area measurement with some unit conversion. Grade 5 students will need to be able to: -estimate and measure the perimeter and area of polygons -select and justify the most appropriate units to measure (mm, cm, dm, m, km) -solve problems requiring conversion from metres to centimetres and from kilometres to metres -use the formulas for finding the perimeter and area of a rectangle Grade 6 students will need to: -estimate and measure length and area -select and justify the appropriate measurement unit (mm, cm, dm, m, km) -solve problems requiring conversion from larger to smaller metric units -use the formulas for finding the area of parallelograms and triangles

Students are working on using the formula for finding the perimeter of a rectangle (P= Wx2 + Lx2) Grade 5 students use their math textbook and do #5, 6, 8, and 10. Grade 6 students do #5, 6, 8, and 10 on their worksheet. Grade 6 students also have a sheet of questions for social studies: Who are Canada’s largest trading partners? Why? How and why did the Stephen Lewis Foundation develop? What type of work does it do?
