Field Trip Tomorrow!

Just a reminder that we will be going on our field trip to see the movie "Wonder" tomorrow. We will be leaving at 10:30 and returning around 2:00. Students will eat their Nutrition Break snack before we leave and will eat lunch as soon as we arrive back at the school.

Science Quiz Moved

Due to my absence yesterday, the Science quiz has been moved to tomorrow, Thursday, November 30th. Please take the extra time to review.

Grade 6 Space Unit Quiz

The Grade 6 students have been studying the solar system in Science this term. Their Unit quiz will take place on Wednesday. Students were asked to take home their Science folders at the end of the day so that they may use their notes and worksheets to review this weekend. Students will be asked to: -Identify the planets in a diagram of the solar system -Identify different attributes about each of the planets (ie: Mars is known as the Red Planet, Jupiter is the largest, it has a giant storm on its surface) -Identify the Inner Planets and the Outer Planets -Identify bodies in space that emit or reflect light -Identify attributes about the Earth (ie: rotates on an axis, orbits the sun once every 365 days) -Identify information about how astronauts survive in space as well as deal with daily routines such as eating, sleeping, using the washroom, cleaning. -Using information they have learned about how astronauts survive on the international space station (ISS) and deal with daily

Grade 5 Unit Quiz on Body Systems

Students will be having an end of unit quiz on the body systems we have studied in Science this term. The quiz will take place Wednesday. Students were asked to take home their folders at the end of today to review their notes and worksheets over the weekend. Students will be asked to do the following: -Label the parts of the digestive system, respiratory system, and heart (right and left sides and where the blood is travelling to or from) -Answer questions on the digestive system, respiratory system, and circulatory system. -Describe the journey a piece of toast will take through the digestive system -Choose 2 systems that we discussed and describe how they interact, naming the important parts and why it is important they interact. Please have students review the information in their folders and give an answer to some of these things to you.

Wonder Field Trip

We have finished reading a wonderful novel called "Wonder". It is a heartwarming story filled with messages of kindness and caring. The movie based on the book is currently in theatres and we have the opportunity to see it for free. There was a letter sent home today with the details and forms to be filled out by a parent or guardian. Please return these as soon as possible so that we can ensure everyone will be able to join us on this field trip. The date of the trip is Friday, December 1. We will be leaving the school at 10:30 and should be returning around 2:00.

Homework for Thurs. Nov. 23

Students were learning about the three ways to identify triangles based on their side lengths (equilateral, isosceles, scalene). Students are encouraged to practice identifying these types of triangles for homework tonight.

Homework for Tuesday, November 21

The students are exploring the various attributes of the polygons. Students are to practice identifying the following polygons and discussing their attributes: triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, octagons. Here is a link to my song about identifying these types of Polygons: https://youtu.be/8TpgAk7lokM

Homework for the Weekend of November 16

Continuing from the homework the students have been doing the last 2 nights on angles, students should keep practicing their identification and measurement of angles. They have now also learned how to create angles with a given measurement in degrees, using their protractors. Students should practice constructing these angles over the weekend. Grade 5 students have to be able to create angles up to 90 degreees, and grade 5 students should be able to create angles up to 180 degrees. The more students practice with their protractors (measuring and constructing) the easier it will become.

Homework for Wednesday, Nov. 15

We have begun identifying angles and measuring them with a protractor. Students are asked to practice this at home in order to hone this skill. Students should first identify the angle as a right angle, acute angle, obtuse angle, or straight angle. They should then estimate the measurement of the angle before measuring. Then students should use their protractors to measure the angle. I have protractors that I am allowing the students to use for angle measurement, however, they are becoming worn and scratched with time and some students may wish to have their own to use in the classroom. Students will need a compass to use during this unit as well. I encourage students to purchase a math set if they do not already have these tools. The math set should include both a protractor and a compass.

Progress Reports

The progress reports went home with the students today. Please keep the report cards and return the envelopes with the students. This will allow us to reuse the envelope for each report card and save resources. Thank you.

Math Patterning Test Monday

Students will have the Unit Quiz for the Patterning Unit in Math on Monday. Students should review the work in their folders and the work done in the textbook. Grade 5 students will need to: -Write the first terms of a pattern when given the pattern rule -Write the pattern rule for a given set of numbers -Write the next terms in a set of given numbers in a pattern -Complete a table for a given operation in an input/output machine -Write the pattern rule for the input or output column in a table -Create a table based on a geometric model -Identify future terms in a pattern (such as the 10th or 20th term in a list of numbers) -Use a table to solve a pattern word problem Grade 6 students will need to: -Write the first terms of a pattern when given the pattern rule involving two operations for each term -Write the pattern rule for a given set of numbers with two operations between each term -Write the next terms in a set of given numbers in a pattern involving two operatio

Homework for Thursday, Nov. 2

Students began writing their rough drafts using the brainstorms they had completed last night for homework. We reviewed how to use the groupings from our brainstorm to begin writing their paragraphs using these ideas. Students are asked to have their completed paragraphs for tomorrow so that they may work on editing and revising tomorrow. Unfortunately, the agendas were not completed today, but students were told of their homework and, at the end of the day, were reminded to take their brainstorm and their rough draft home.

Homework for Wednesday, Nov. 1

Students are to practice creating a brainstorm of a topic of their choice in preparation for writing a multi-paragraph piece. They should then organize their ideas into groups which can be written into paragraphs tomorrow. We practiced brainstorming and organizing today for a piece about trick or treating. The students gave ideas about the general topic and wrote I wrote them in the brainstorm. We then organized each idea bubble by giving it a symbol. Each similar ideas had the same symbol so that we know that they will go together in the same paragraph. This is all the students should do when organizing. They do not need to rewrite the ideas together to group them. Students should be aware of the common idea for each group (paragraph). When we did this, we had three main groups. One was about the basics of trick or treating, one was safety tips, and one was about being kind when trick or treating.
